Angama Mara

Angama Mara is one of Africa’s most iconic safari lodges, dramatically perched on the edge of the Great Rift Valley escarpment overlooking Kenya’s vast Maasai Mara National Reserve. Its name, “Angama,” comes from the Swahili word for “suspended in mid-air,” which perfectly captures the lodge’s breathtaking setting—300 meters above the plains, offering uninterrupted views that stretch for miles.

The lodge was inspired by the classic film Out of Africa, parts of which were filmed in the surrounding landscape. This connection is reflected in the lodge’s elegant yet understated design, blending modern luxury with nostalgic safari charm. Angama Mara is divided into two intimate camps, each with just 15 tented suites. These suites are not traditional tents but rather glass-fronted structures that allow guests to wake up to panoramic views of wildlife roaming the savannah below.

One of the most remarkable features of Angama Mara is its proximity to the Great Migration, one of the world’s most spectacular wildlife events. Every year, millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles cross the plains of the Maasai Mara in search of fresh grazing, often braving dramatic river crossings filled with crocodiles. Guests at Angama Mara enjoy front-row seats to this natural phenomenon, along with year-round opportunities to see the “Big Five”: lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos, and buffalo.

Beyond game drives, the lodge offers unique experiences such as guided walking safaris, hot air balloon rides over the savannah, and visits to nearby Maasai communities where guests can learn about local culture and traditions. The lodge also emphasizes personalized service—each guest is assigned a dedicated guide and vehicle, allowing for flexible, tailor-made safari experiences.

Sustainability and conservation are central to Angama Mara’s philosophy. The lodge works closely with local communities and conservation initiatives to protect wildlife and support education and employment in the region. Its design minimizes environmental impact while maximizing comfort and immersion in nature.

In essence, Angama Mara is not just a place to stay—it is an experience that combines luxury, adventure, and cultural richness. Its extraordinary location, thoughtful design, and commitment to conservation make it one of the most sought-after safari destinations in Africa.
