South Africa’s Kruger National Park is one of the best places to spot the Big Five. Covering over 7,500 square miles, Kruger offers phenomenal game viewing all year round. The southern region is excellent for lions, elephants, buffalo and rhinos, while the central and northern areas are best for leopard sightings. Some top lodges include lower Zambezi, Mashatu and Lion Sands.
In Tanzania, the Serengeti ecosystem is simply unparalleled for safari experiences. From December to May, over a million wildebeest and zebras migrate across this landscape followed closely by massive prides of lions and lone buffalo herds. The perfect base for multi-day mobile camps would be Fig Tree Camp or Grumeti Reserves’ Faru Faru and Sasakwa lodges.
Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve is renowned for its annual wildebeest migration and high predator populations. Samburu and Buffalo Springs National Reserves also offer excellent game viewing all year. I would recommend staying at eco-luxury camps like Rekero, Governors’ or Mara Plains to fully immerse yourselves in the Mara’s natural splendors.
In Zambia, both South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi National Parks offer great sightings of leopards along with lions, elephants, buffalo and rhinos. Mfuwe Lodge, Kapamba and Chongwe River Camp are top choices for comfortable bush accommodation with guided activities.
Finally, Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is famous for habituated mountain gorilla families. But you can also see golden monkeys along with buffalo on the forest fringes. For the best wildlife encounters, I’d suggest staying at Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge.South Africa’s Kruger National Park is one of the best places to spot the Big Five.
