Wildlife encounter
I was out hiking in the rugged mountains one afternoon, enjoying the beautiful scenery and fresh air. As the sun began to set, illuminating the peaks in a warm orange glow, I realized I was farther from the trailhead than expected. I knew I needed to start heading back before nightfall set in.
As I turned to begin the descent, movement in the trees below caught my eye. Peering closely, I spotted a mother moose and her young calf browsing the undergrowth. I paused to observe them, fascinated by these massive yet graceful creatures in their natural habitat. However, after a few minutes, the moose suddenly became agitated and started stomping her hooves and snorting loudly.
Sensing danger, I slowly backed away to put some distance between us. That’s when I heard a low, guttural growl emerge from the forest to my left. Pushing through the brush was a huge grizzly bear, at least seven feet tall. It had obviously been following the moose’s movements. The mother moose tried to scare the bear off by fake charging at it while defending her calf.
The bear was having none of it and began advancing towards them aggressively. I knew I needed to distract the bear before a confrontation occurred, so I started loudly clapping my hands and yelling to get its attention on me instead. The strategy worked, and the massive beast turned its focus in my direction with a ferocious roar. Adrenaline surging through my veins, I grabbed small stones and began pelting the bear while slowly retreating.
After what seemed like an eternity, the bear finally lost interest and ambled back into the forest. I was left shaky but unscathed from the harrowing encounter. As the sun dipped below the peaks, kicking my hike into high gear, I vowed never to test my luck with mountain wildlife again by delaying my exit before nightfall. It had certainly been an experience I’ll never forget!
