Wildlife Identification

Identifying wildlife can be a fun and rewarding hobby. Whether you encounter an animal in the wilderness, your backyard, or just see one in a picture, figuring out its species can be an interesting challenge. There are several things to pay attention to that can help narrow down your search.

First, note the size and shape of the animal. Is it large or small? Is the body elongated or stocky? Things like these will help rule out some possibilities. Other physical attributes to observe are coloring, markings or patterns on the fur or skin. Pay close attention to things like stripes, spots, or unique colors. Examine features of the head like eyes, ears, nose and mouth too.

Take note of how the animal moves – does it hop, walk, run, or climb? Does it have webbed feet or wings? These clues can provide valuable insight into what type of animal it is and what habitat it prefers. You’ll also want to consider where and when you saw it. Was it near water, in trees, or on the ground? Different environments are home to different wildlife. The time of day or year could also impact what animals are most likely to be seen.

Once you’ve gathered these key physical descriptions and contextual details, it’s time to start researching. References like field guides containing pictures and drawings are invaluable. You can compare your observations to profiles of candidate animals. Online searching and apps are also useful tools. With a bit of detective work cross-referencing traits, behavior, habitat and location, you should eventually be able to match your sighting and positively identify the species. Wildlife identification takes practice, but it’s a fun way to better understand and appreciate the natural world around us.
