Self Drive Safari

As we drove along the dusty trails, the sun was starting to sink low in the sky, painting the landscape in shades of orange and gold. In the distance, silhouettes of acacia trees dotted the flat expanse. “I’m detecting movement ahead,” I notified you from the vehicle’s speakers. “Zooming in with infrared, it appears to be a herd of impala grazing in the dwindling light.”

We slowed our pace not to disturb the many horned animals nibbling on grass and shrubs. A few raised their heads warily at our approach but did not flee, accustomed to the safari vehicles. You noticed a pair locked in a territorial standoff, rams butting heads as they vied for dominance over the group.

Our route then took us along the edge of a watering hole, where hippos lounged in the cooling mud and water birds waded the shallows, poking at the mud with their bills. A lone elephant stood at the water’s edge, thick trunk snaking down to suck up gallons of the precious liquid into its gaping mouth.

As night fell fully, our headlights illuminated the way as nocturnal animals emerged from their daytime hiding spots. We came across a family of bushbabies, the tiny primates peering with wide eyes from the higher branches. Further on, the yowls and growls of hunting hyenas echoed across the open plain.
