Volcanoes Nation Park Safari

Volcanoes National Park is one of the top destinations in Africa to see endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Spanning over 160 square miles, the park is also home to several towering active volcanoes, lush forests, savanna grasslands, and over 200 species of birds. To truly experience all this incredible park has to offer, I recommend dedicating at least 5 days to really immerse yourself in the beauty and wildlife.

The first step is obtaining your gorilla trekking permits, which should be booked 6-12 months in advance. There are only a limited number given out each day due to the fragility of the gorilla population. Your 2 hour encounter with the gorillas will be simply unforgettable as you get up close to observe their behaviors.

After your trek, spend the next two days exploring the various hiking trails within the park. Two of the most photogenic volcanoes to climb are Mount Bisoke and Mount Karisimbi, which both provide breathtaking panoramic views once you reach the summits. Be sure to pack proper gear, water, and snacks as some climbs can take 5-8 hours round trip. Have your guide point out any signs of golden monkeys, buffalos, or elephant herds you may come across along the trails.

On the evenings, relax and take in the scenic sunsets from your lodge within the park. The best accommodations I recommend are Gorilla’s Nest or Mukiza Gorilla Camp for their comfortable rooms, delicious cuisine made from locally-sourced ingredients, and proximity to witness more wildlife just outside your balcony.

After a few days of hiking active volcanoes and observing the diverse flora and fauna within Volcanoes National Park, your safari adventure will leave you with unforgettable memories to last a lifetime.
